Introduction and Course Overview

By Will Newton

Most people who take up running focus solely on becoming increasingly fitter for running. It's only when they decide they want to run faster or further that they might consider improving their running technique.

This is almost certainly a mistake, because running with poor form can impede even your fitness progress through frustration with a lack of progress or injury, which harms consistency and thus the very same fitness we're after.

As mentioned in the lesson video, improvements in running come about in more than one area...

Physical Conditioning

  • Cardivascular fitness allows the delivery of more energy to the muscles (and other tissues) with the accumulation of fewer byproducts.
  • Improved muscular endurance keeps muscles contracting more forcefully for longer, allowing us to run faster for longer.

Efficiency (or Economy)

  • Improved ability of the body to liberate energy to fuel activity, especially from fat stores.
  • Better running technique which eliminates any waste of energy on inefficient movement.

It's this efficiency through improved running technique that we're going to investigate on this course.

As discussed in the lesson video, here's an overview of the course structure...

It's always fun to start something new, so let's get started with improving your running technique.
