The foam roller glute release is a very effective way to release the tension that builds up in your glutes due to all the sitting you do as part of a modern lifestyle.
We spend far too much time sitting on one of the most powerful muscles in our bodies. The result is that our glutes tighten up, not only causing pain in the muscle itself but affecting other parts of your kinetic chain too. You know that pain in your hip joint? Or that Sciatica? It's perfectly possible these have links to tight muscles in the glute area.
The foam roller glute release is the best place to start because the roller has a bigger area and places less trigger point pressure on the muscle. Once you've made a significant change, using a tennis or lacrosse ball can help you to make even more change.
I used to carry a lacrosse ball in my laptop case when I was driving a lot because it allowed me to do this mobility exercise, even when sitting in a chair during (boring) meetings.
As with any mobility work using pressure, if you feel burning pain or numbness, you're almost certainly on a spot where you're pressing on a nerve. Be clever: get off that spot.
